Although fundamental in physics, space keeps its mystery. Different, and even contradictory, conceptions appear in the different branches of physics, past and present.
Physicists, mathematicians, philosophers and historians met at the Ecole de Physique des Houches (France), from September 30th to October 3rd, 1997, for a workshop " Conceptions of space in physics ". There, they have intended to elaborate and confront their conceptions of physical space. They tried to recognise and analyse, among its characteristics, those that are common to all epochs and disciplines; and also those that make their differences. The texts presented here give only a very partial view – mainly those of the physicists - of the subjects discussed in the meeting.
With this meeting, we have tried to initiate an interdisciplinary reflection, at the European level, about the question of space, with two main questions:
What are the properties of physical space suggested by philosophical or epistemological reflections on the one hand, and by physical experience and observations, on the other?
Which (new) mathematical structures allow incorporating them into physics?

The text of C. Vilain, historical and philosophical, explores some aspects of the introduction of space in physics in the XVIIth century. Referring to Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, Leibniz, Newton ... , it makes apparent some of the difficulties linked to the concept.
The spaces involved in relativity and in quantum mechanics success to that of Newton. Many questions arise, concerning the status of each, and their links and differences: the question of the ether, the existence and properties of the vacuum, the absolute or relative character, the symmetries etc.    This later point is the subject of M. Lachièze-Rey, under the view of modern geometry.
Space concerns relativistic astrophysics and cosmology. J.- P. Mbelek discusses the astrophysical implications of the possible presence of a scalar field. This mysterious entity - in some sense, an intermediary between space, or vacuum, and matter - may concern many hot questions in astrophysics and cosmology. In addition, the two texts by B. Roukema and J.- P. Luminet review the historical, geometrical and astrophysical aspects of the topology of the cosmic space.
J.- C. Pissondes analyses some aspects of scale relativity, which has been an attempt to reconcile the quantum and the relativistic aspects of physics. The papers by A. B. Kpamegan, M. Heller, D. Lambert, J. Madore, and I. Stamatescu concern (contemporaneous) speculative attempts, to use new geometrical concepts in the definition of physical space. They propose some new approaches to reconstruct a space, or a space-time, with properties different from those encountered today in physics. This in particular the case of the non-commutative geometry: this generalisation of space, without points, may offer a convenient frame for a future theory taking into accounts both quantum and relativistic aspects. Here, conceptual and historical aspects are presented, as well as more technical results.
